Before anyone is a wine connoisseur, they all experience a moment similar to this. You’ve been invited to a dinner. You want to bring a nice bottle of something, but you don’t have the first clue about wine. Should you get a red or white? What brands are good? What brands are overpriced? Why is boxed wine shunned by “real” wine drinkers? When it comes to wine, one of the best ways to learn more about it is by trying it. Thankfully, metro Detroit has a few wine-centered events coming up in September for you budding sommeliers to check out! To celebrate its 50th anniversary, George’s Livonia Gardens is holding a wine tasting event to benefit local veteran groups. The event will also include hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and a raffle. Tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Oncology Program and the breast oncology fellowship will be holding a benefit event to benefit patient care and research. The event, held at Bacco Ristorante, will include wine and food from local chefs, such as Luciano Del Signore and Gabriel Botezan from Bacco Ristorante, James Rigato from Mabel Gray, Andy Hollyday from Selden Standard, and Madeline Triffon from Plum Market. While not exclusively about wine, Whiskey & Wine Fest is also a celebration of another popular drink that is used to enhance the flavor of certain foods. If you’re more of a wine drinker but have a whiskey-drinking friend you want to bring along, who knows, maybe you’ll both come out of this event with a greater appreciation for the other. If you’ve always been curious about some of the myths surrounding wine, like whether sulfites cause headaches or if screwcaps are a sign of inferior wine, you’ll want to check out this workshop at Michigan by the Bottle in Royal Oak. Become more informed about the world of wine so you can make better purchasing decisions at the store or on your next outing. Pre-selected pours that serve as demonstration are included in the $15 entry fee. Remember to drink responsibly and plan ahead with a designated driver or take advantage of one of these local designated driving services.
